MITECO

This project aims to consolidate the Globe Wetlands Awards as an international mechanism to increase awareness of the state of these ecosystems and to strengthen the weight of civil society in compliance with multilateral environmental agreements.

This project aims to consolidate the Globe Wetlands Awards as an international mechanism to increase awareness of the state of these ecosystems and to strengthen the weight of civil society in compliance with multilateral environmental agreements.

The candidates’ information is based directly on the field experience of civil society groups, making it key for decision-makers and complementary to the national wetland reports that governments submit to each Ramsar Convention Conference.

The results of the first edition, which had the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation, made it possible to highlight success stories in the field of wetland management, and to draw attention to those in serious danger. The latter were presented at the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Japan in 2010, which made it possible to establish alliances and support local wetland conservation campaigns.

The new edition will follow up on the previous one, improving the methodology and also by implementing a campaign aimed at the media around the world. It will focus on the wetlands proposed in the last edition, in order to have comparative information on their progress, on wetlands in countries with a low and medium development index, and on the Montreux wetlands. These results will be presented at Ramsar COP11 in 2012, which will take place in Romania.
