Invasion of the Cabrera Archipelago National Park by introduced algae

MITECO

The objective of the project is to determine the dynamics of the expansion of allochthonous algae in the Cabrera National Park, as well as to study their effects on the benthic communities of the area.

The objective of the project is to determine the dynamics of the expansion of allochthonous algae in the Cabrera National Park, as well as to study their effects on the benthic communities of the area.

The actions carried out are as follows:

  • Monitoring the expansion of different invasive macroalgae: study of the affected communities, distribution and abundance of invasive species.
  • Monitoring of the cover and biomass of invasive species with respect to other species at specific stations in the National Park.
  • Study of the annual cycle with biomass measurements and morphological and phenological description of the species introduced in fixed seasons.
  • Study of the mechanisms that favor invasion: sexual and asexual reproduction, vegetative dispersal, growth rates, durability and resilience of populations, palatability by herbivores.
