Making the EU budget work for biodiversity

MITECO

The project aims to ensure that the policy agreements reached on biodiversity in 2010 are translated into effective action to improve biodiversity protection in the EU, notably through full and effective funding of the Natura 2000 Network.

The project aims to ensure that the policy agreements reached on biodiversity in 2010 are translated into effective action to improve biodiversity protection in the EU, notably through full and effective funding of the Natura 2000 Network.

In May 2011 the European Commission published its new Biodiversity Strategy, outlining the framework for action to protect biodiversity in the next decade.

However, in order to protect biodiversity, this strategy must be accompanied by the necessary funds. To this end, it is essential that the next European budget (2014-2020) has sufficient funds to implement the strategy, and to achieve the conservationist objectives established in the Habitats and Birds Directive (Natura 2000 Network).

This project, developed by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), an NGO whose aim is to be the voice of European citizens on environmental justice, sustainable development and participatory democracy, will continue to work with the aim of increasing the EU budget available for the Natura 2000 Network and for the Biodiversity Strategy.

The activities it includes are:

  • Hold meetings with Members of the European Parliament to allow for a more detailed discussion in relation to this issue.
  • Produce promotional material to support the event and bilateral meetings.
  • Edit a brochure on investing in green infrastructure.
  • Organise a meeting with the heads of the European Parliament, the European Commission and governments to discuss the importance of financing the protection of biodiversity and the Natura 2000 Network.
