Management of urban SPAs in Extremadura for the conservation of the lesser kestrel

MITECO

The project aims to develop a management model for urban SPAs that ensures the long-term conservation of the lesser kestrel.

The conservation and recovery of the lesser kestrel in the colonies installed in urban SPAs (Special Protection Area for Birds) in Extremadura is the objective of a project launched by the Terra Naturalis: Nature, culture and development association and which has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Food and Environment, within the framework of its call for aid.

With this project, the association aims to develop a management model for urban SPAs that ensures the conservation of the lesser kestrel in the long term, adopting effective measures to reduce or eliminate its main threats. The lines of action of the project are:

– Improve the conservation and management of breeding colonies in urban SPAs.

– Ensure the conservation of the feeding habitats on which urban populations of lesser kestrel depend.

– To raise awareness among the local population about the conservation problems of the species and to involve them in solving them.

– Develop and promote tourist experiences based on the lesser kestrel, as a model of sustainable economic activity at the local level.

– Present a Replicability Strategy that allows the results of the project to be transmitted beyond its purpose.
