Methodological guide for the participatory preparation of drought risk management plans

MITECO

Climate change scenarios predict an increase in the frequency and intensity of droughts. To this end, it is necessary to strengthen our capacity to deal with these phenomena through prevention, mitigation and adaptation strategies, which respond to local needs and favour the recovery of the good condition of aquatic ecosystems and groundwater. Despite the progress made at the level of river basin districts and large municipalities, small and medium-sized populations do not have drought risk management tools adapted to their specific needs.

The New Water Culture Foundation (CANF), thanks to the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, launched a project called “Development of a methodological guide for the participatory preparation of drought risk management plans (PGRS) in small and medium-sized populations in climate change scenarios” to respond to these needs.

Within the framework of the project, a draft Drought Risk Management Plan has been prepared in Madridejos (Toledo), Puente Genil (Córdoba) and Xàbea (Alicante), a methodology has also been developed for the participatory preparation of drought risk management plans in small and medium-sized towns and finally a guide has been developed to facilitate the administrative procedure for the preparation and approval of risk management plans for drought. drought.
