A project that seeks to increase the profitability of productions and the conservation of breeds while preserving the genetic heritage of Spanish livestock.

The main purpose was the creation of a tool that would facilitate the breeder of native breeds to manage the Stud Book of their Organizations, in order to obtain an improvement in the management of their farms, to achieve greater profitability of their productions and the conservation of their breeds, preserving the genetic heritage of the breeds of Spanish cattle.

To this end, it is necessary to study the starting situation, the design and development of a common basic multispecies management computer system and the training of users in the use of the new application.

Among other activities, the project includes the identification of weaknesses in the current systems, the review of the management systems used by the various Purebred Breeders’ Organisers, the establishment of the protocol for the migration of existing data to the common system and the replacement of the rudimentary management systems currently used by the developed IT tool.

In October 2011, the Spanish Federation of Select Livestock Associations (EAGF) presented the software called “Geslib-Pex” for the modernization of herd book management systems within the framework of the project. This program is a computer software that facilitates the keeping of the Stud Book and the productive yields of the farms of the different breeds.

Thanks to it, it is intended to create a computer tool that facilitates the management of the Stud Book of the native breeds, in order to obtain an improvement to achieve greater profitability of their productions and, ultimately, achieve the conservation of their breeds, preventing their disappearance and preserving the genetic heritage of the Spanish cattle breeds.

The main objective of the project has focused on carrying out an in-depth study of the situation of the Stud Books of the Native Breeds of Spanish Cattle, as well as on developing a computer management system, in order to register and locate all the animals registered, apply the conservation and improvement program and, in short, to guarantee the variability of these breeds.
