Natura 2000: Connecting people with biodiversity

MITECO

The purpose of the project is to enhance the appreciation of the Natura 2000 Network in Spain and its positive perception.

The project “Natura 2000: Connecting people with biodiversity”, an initiative launched by the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/BirdLife), with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, has as its main objective to improve knowledge and awareness in Spain about the Natura 2000 Network and thus contribute to its conservation. To achieve this objective, the aim is to improve society’s knowledge of the Natura 2000 Network, increase the appreciation of the Network by interested sectors and train key actors in the conservation of the Natura 2000 Network in the legal obligations arising from the Birds and Habitats Directives.

The purpose of the project is to enhance the appreciation of the Natura 2000 Network in Spain and its positive perception, which can improve society’s relationship with it. A greater understanding of its values and opportunities will help in an extensive, integrated and multifunctional use of the territory. In addition, increased public support may also promote a better reorientation of regional funds for the protection of this important Network.

30% of the Spanish territory is included in the Natura 2000 Network, which represents a contribution of 15.5% of the territory in Europe. This means that any effort to improve the acceptance and appreciation of this Network in Spain will have a significant effect on the protection of European biodiversity. The broad perspective of the project seeks its replication in other European countries, as well as the establishment and establishment of the celebration of the European Day of the Natura 2000 Network with the support of BirdLife International.

To determine the effectiveness of the project, its impact will be measured by carrying out specific sampling. The most valuable and effective initiatives will be specifically disclosed as “good practices” with the aim of increasing knowledge and appreciation of the Natura 2000 Network.
