PITMAR. Sea Turtle Knowledge and Conservation

MITECO

This project aims to contribute to the conservation and knowledge of sea turtles at the international level.

The project “PITMAR. Knowledge and conservation of sea turtles: expansion of the database, dissemination and use of the program by the scientific and educational community”, launched by the Neotropic Foundation, aims to contribute to the conservation and knowledge of sea turtles at the international level through the universal use of the sea turtle photoidentification program (PITMAR).

This initiative also proposes the participation of the international scientific community in the program and seeks to increase the number of specimens registered and included in the database. In addition, it is intended that there will be an increase in the number of records of sightings of previously registered specimens.

To this end, interested entities in the PITMAR project will be given access to provide images and data from new records, as well as for the inclusion of data on sightings or recaptures.

Within the framework of this project, new uses are also sought in the algorithm, to disseminate the program both nationally and internationally, to offer technical training to the participating entities and experts and to make the PITMAR database a generalized tool as a standard system for the identification of sea turtles. New utilities will also be created for statistical analysis of data, such as geographical area and chronological filter maps.

The project will be disseminated at congresses, technical meetings and symposia, as well as on social networks. Video tutorials will be produced explaining the use of the algorithm and the PITMAR databases and geographic and chronological search filters will be developed in the database and on the associated website.

Thus, it is intended to increase knowledge about sea turtles and raise awareness about their conservation by using the PITMAR as an environmental education tool. On the other hand, rehabilitated sea turtles will be released with and without video streaming.
