The initiative aims to activate a series of actions to recover the bearded vulture population in the Aragonese Pyrenees.
Specifically, the objective is to comply with lines 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 of the Strategy for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture in Spain, approved in July 2000 by the National Commission for the Protection of Nature. These are the points related to the reduction of unnatural mortality factors, the monitoring of the population and the improvement in the conservation and management of the species.
The main risk factors of the bearded vulture in our country are associated with its low productivity, its low colonisation capacity and its small distribution range, and it is currently confined to the Pyrenees. For this reason, work is being done at the state level on the demographic improvement of the Pyrenean population and on the creation of two incipient nuclei based on reintroduction projects.
This project aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To improve the reproductive control of potential areas of recolonization in the Pyrenees.
- Enhance the physiological state of females by improving feeding at the pre-laying stage.
- Maintain the supplementary feeding programme in the Pyrenean corridor.
- To tackle the causes of reproductive failure in different phases, paying special attention to aspects related to the application of veterinary protocols and ecotoxicology.
