MITECO

The general objective of the project is the recovery and conservation of the national population of Bonelli’s eagle-goshawk, through population reinforcement in Madrid and Navarre and the reintroduction of the species in Mallorca.

The general objective of the project is the recovery and conservation of the national population of Bonelli’s eagle-goshawk, through population reinforcement in Madrid and Navarre and the reintroduction of the species in Mallorca.

Until now, the conservation of the Bonelli’s eagle in Spain has been addressed by working on specific populations, usually within the limits of the autonomous communities. For the first time, a long-term project is proposed, which considers the Spanish population as a whole, taking into account that the different population centers of the species behave as elements of a metapopulation, with an exchange of individuals between them.

The project is aimed at the recovery of breeding populations of Bonelli’s eagle (Aquila fasciata), through the release of viable specimens of the species, mainly chicks from captive breeding. This breeding is carried out at the GREFA Breeding Centre.

The breeding and health control of the specimens destined for the project and the transfer of these animals to the release points in the corresponding autonomous communities will be carried out by GREFA, with the permits of the affected communities, and with the permission of the Community of Madrid.

In addition, an action protocol has been established between all the parties involved with the advice of GREFA. The monitoring of the reintroduction, as well as the implementation of the release method, will be carried out in Navarre by the Government of Navarre, in Mallorca by the Department of the Environment of the Government of the Balearic Islands and in Madrid by GREFA. The initiative has the collaboration of the Junta de Andalucía, which will provide copies for inclusion in the project.

Specific objectives:

  • Development of the captive breeding program of the species at the GREFA Breeding Center.
  • Reinforcement of the Bonelli’s eagle population in Madrid.
  • Recovery of the Bonelli’s eagle population in the Balearic Islands.
  • Reinforcement of the Bonelli’s eagle-goshawk population in Navarre.
  • Complete monitoring during the dependency and dispersal phases of all released specimens.
