The Catalan goat is a native and ancestral breed widely documented in the zootechnical literature of the mid-twentieth century. However, its population has been decreasing to the point that in 2005 it was considered extinct.
The general objective is the conservation, recovery and reintroduction in situ of the Catalan Montsec goat breed. The project will be accompanied by the creation of a Slow Food “Presidium”, which highlights the value of meat and dairy derivatives from the Catalan goat, thus increasing the chances of success of the initiative.
With the objectives set, it is intended to prevent the extinction of the Catalan goat and reintroduce it into its natural environment of exploitation, as well as to study and learn about its productive and agroecological potential. It also seeks to raise awareness among the local population about the conservation of agricultural biodiversity and, especially, of traditional breeds and management methods.
