The project aims to contribute to the development of the competences held by the Cabildo Insular de la Palma in terms of wildlife conservation and management of rehabilitation centres for these species.
In recent years there has been a considerable increase in the number of specimens cared for on the island, mainly due to increasing citizen collaboration. Thus, in 2007 a total of 190 specimens belonging to 27 different species were treated, as a result of accidental collisions and accidents, injuries by firearms and poisoning. For the professional care of these animals, it is necessary to provide the center with a comprehensive service, which includes everything from veterinary services to the organization of awareness campaigns.
The main objective of the project, therefore, is to improve the capacities of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre on the island of La Palma, by carrying out the following actions:
- Provide a professional veterinary service to the centre and the necessary means for the staff.
- Carrying out a major information campaign at the island level.
- Improvement of existing facilities.
