The project “Reintroduction of the black vulture in the Pyrenees” aims to contribute to the recovery of this species.
The project “Reintroduction of the black vulture in the Pyrenees”, of the Rural Nature Association, aims to contribute to the recovery of the old European distribution area of the black vulture and recover its role as a breeder in an area where it disappeared a hundred years ago, the Lleida Pre-Pyrenees.
Thus, this initiative aims to create a viable breeding nucleus in the long term, increase the size of the colony annually, maximize the number of pairs that start breeding and increase the reproductive success of those that start breeding. In addition, the project seeks to recruit exogenous black vultures and follow the population in the release zone.
Artificial breeding platforms will also be maintained, specific supplementary feeding will be provided and hatched chicks will be marked for subsequent control and monitoring of nests. Monitoring of the expansion process of the specimens will be carried out via satellite.
With these measures, it is expected to increase the population of vultures through releases and the release of a minimum of six specimens per year. In addition, it seeks to raise awareness among the local population about the presence of the species. Finally, within the framework of the project’s actions, an informative story will be published and a website will be created and maintained.
