Renaturalization of irrigation reservoirs in the Mar Menor (RNBR) environment

MITECO

  • The project acts on 9 irrigation ponds with a storage capacity of 592 m3, installing floating islands with aquatic vegetation to reduce pollutants and improve irrigation water quality.
  • It includes renaturalization actions on 35 hectares through the revegetation of the ponds, their banks and the plots where they are located, using different strata and plant barriers and promoting ecological connectivity in the agricultural environment.

The general objective is the naturalization of nine irrigation ponds and their surroundingsThe project will also create green filters that improve the quality of irrigation water, function as biodiversity refuges and generate land space for erosion reduction, improve ecological connectivity, reduce irrigation water consumption and evaluate alternative crops.

Its specific goals include:

  • Implementation of a pilot experience of green filters to capture agrochemicals and salts in the water of irrigation ponds by means of macrophyte vegetation.
  • Increased biodiversity of vertebrates, invertebrates and plants.
  • Improved erosion, runoff and soil health.
  • Integration of irrigation ponds in the landscape.
  • Reduction of volumes of water use and/or demand.
  • Renaturalization of the nine ponds with floating islands and vegetated banks.
  • Improvement of vegetation cover and erosion control.
  • Creation of at least one ecological corridor to improve ecological connectivity.
  • Planting of alternative crops to horticultural crops and with reduced irrigation.
  • Communication, dissemination and transfer of results.
