Research on the conditioning factors of nursery cultivation that influence the quality of native forest species in Melilla

MITECO

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the knowledge and conservation of the main forest species of Melilla.

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the knowledge and conservation of the main forest species of Melilla.

In this way, it is intended to respond to the need for native plants of genetic and morphological quality that offer satisfactory results in the recovery of SCIs (Sites of Community Importance), river channels and other local natural areas. To this end, the main native forest species of Guelaya, the natural region in which Melilla is located, will be studied in a nursery for one year and under different conditions and techniques.

In addition, a database on these species will be launched based on qualitative and quantitative morphological measurements, which will allow us to know the most important parameters for their cultivation and subsequent development in the field. All this will serve as a scientific basis to model the production of plants for the Autonomous City of Melilla, which has not existed to date.

The specific actions planned are the following:

  • Conditioning of the cultivation areas, installation of a greenhouse and a shader, adaptation of the work area, leveling and placement of weed control netting and nursery tables.
  • Installation of automatic irrigation system.
  • Visit to the forest nurseries of Ecologists in Action in Abarán (Murcia).
  • Collection and preparation of reproductive material, preparation of substrates, pre-germination and sowing, cutting and planting.
  • Carrying out cultivation work according to the germination, growth and hardening phases.
  • Measurements and collection of data in the nursery of the reproductive and growth process and preparation of a database.
  • Interpretation and dissemination of results.
