The initiative aims to support indigenous organizations so that they can contribute to the process and outcomes of the Rio+20 Summit.
This support will be provided through interregional coordination, the preparation of official documents (such as that of the Indigenous Peoples Major Group) and advocacy activities (case studies, preparation and dissemination of the CD “Indigenous Peoples and Sustainable Development”, etc.). The participation of indigenous representatives in the summit, as well as in the preparatory meetings, will be supported.
It is also intended that the materials developed in the formal process phases, case studies for preparatory discussions and presentation at the summit, as well as the final CD, will be useful beyond this meeting and serve to raise awareness of indigenous peoples’ visions for sustainable development in view of the UN World Conference on Indigenous Peoples. to be held in 2014.
All activities will be carried out in consultation with the Rio+20 Indigenous Coordinating Committee, established in May 2011. Indigenous organizations will select the topics of work, the experts who will prepare the case studies and the representatives who will participate in the summit.
Almáciga will support the interregional coordination of the process (translation and dissemination of information and communications), provide technical support during the summit (interpretation, translation and revision of documents) and, finally, will compile, edit and disseminate the CD.
