Social dunghills

MITECO

The main objective of this project is the recovery of the populations of necrophagous birds of community interest in Badajoz.

With the project ‘Social dunghills: recovery and connectivity strategy for threatened scavenger bird populations in southern Extremadura’, Action for the Wild World-AMUS seeks the recovery of necrophagous bird populations of community interest in Badajoz.

Thus, it aims to put into practice the new regulations on feeding this type of bird, favouring the reinstatement of the traditional model of by-product supply and involving farmers and slaughterhouses in the conservation of endangered species.

All this with the intention of achieving an operational dunghill integrated into the feeding network of necrophagous species of the government of Extremadura.

Black vulture, red kite and Egyptian vulture, together with other species such as the imperial eagle, take advantage of this new resource. In addition, in six months, between 35 and 40 specimens of various species have been released in the facility.

With this program, it has also been possible for the rural population of Badajoz to increase its environmental sensitivity: at least 50 people have attended the training day held within the framework of the project. On the other hand, 10 livestock farmers and three local meat industries have recovered traditional uses of resource management in line with the ecosystem.

The activities carried out within the framework of this project are:

  • Study of the ideal location for the dunghill in the Sierra Grande de Hornachos SPA (on a private estate where an observatory and an acclimatization facility for rehabilitated scavengers will be installed)
  • Adapt the space for the contribution of carrion
  • Dissemination work among livestock farms and meat industries, within a radius of 30 kilometers from the dunghill so that they can provide their carcasses. +
  • Inform municipalities and agricultural unions.
  • Track the contribution of cattle and consumption by scavengers, as well as the release of recovered birds at the AMUS hospital using the acclimatization facility.
  • General dissemination and project management.
