The initiative aims to improve the effectiveness of the fight against poison in Spain through the awareness of key actors and various actions.

This initiative has improved the effectiveness of the fight against poison in Spain through the sensitization of key actors, legal actions and actions on the ground. Thus, WWF Spain has transmitted the best existing experiences in the fight against poison to key actors in this fight from at least three autonomous communities in aspects related to the application of the regulations. Another of the objectives of the initiative has been to promote the operations of SEPRONA (Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard) against poison, with the support of canine units in high-risk areas, showing the usefulness of canine patrols in this work.

The project has also promoted better application of the law by the courts and environmental administrations and has achieved in the regulations of the autonomous communities to fight poison. Finally, the entity has sought improve the monitoring of specimens of endangered species in sensitive areas, and update the available information and knowledge of poisonings and how they affect wildlife in Spain.

The activities of this project include:

  • Improved information on the use of poisoned baits in Spain
  • Holding of training days
  • Increase in legal actions and prosecution of crime
  • Preparation of a compilation report on the situation of the illegal use of poisoned baits in Spain (1990-2014)
  • Compilation of examples of the best available regulations and preparation of proposals for their incorporation into the autonomous communities that have shortcomings.
  • Pilot experience for the improvement of the monitoring of species affected by venom

The project has achieved Promote some of the most recognized tools for their effectiveness in combating the illegal use of poisoned baits, such as: the improvement in the training of the technicians responsible for the application of the available regulations, the improvement of the regulationsthe impulse to the provision and work of dog patrols for the detection of poisoned baits or the monitoring of species that are very sensitive to poisoning (such as the Black Vulture or the Iberian Imperial Eagle) which, when marked with emitters, facilitate their continuous control and rapid location in the event of an incident, facilitating the intervention of the Agents of the authority. The project has also managed to integrate other monitoring actions with volunteers of other species very sensitive to poisoning, such as the red kite, through the winter control of roosts. Another highlight to which the project has contributed is the compilation of general information available in Spain since records of species poisoning began (1990) to the present.
