Strengthening the labour dimension in the biodiversity agenda

MITECO

The aim of the project is to increase the involvement of trade union links with the biodiversity agenda and to strengthen the capacity of trade unions to intervene on these issues.

The aim of the project is to increase the involvement of trade union links with the biodiversity agenda and to strengthen the capacity of trade unions to intervene on these issues.

The initiative is developed by Sustainlabour, International Labour Foundation for Sustainable Development, an organisation that aims to strengthen the trade union movement, having as its main objectives to promote sustainable development, reinforcing its social and labour dimension.

Biodiversity is closely related to the world of work and work, as it is the direct livelihood of a large part of the population. At the same time, the loss of biodiversity is intimately linked to the current model of production and consumption.

Although trade unions have been strongly incorporating environmental issues into their own agenda and actively accompanying international environmental negotiations, their entry into the biodiversity agenda is more incipient, officially participating for the first time in the Nagoya Summit, held in Japan in October 2010.

This project aims to support this new line of work through the training of trade unions and the promotion of stable frameworks at the international level as steps to strengthen the labour dimension on the agenda of international negotiations and, therefore, at the national level.

The objectives of the project are:

  • Improve the definition of the relationship between biodiversity protection and the labour agenda.
  • Strengthen the coordination and capacity of trade unions at international and national levels.
  • Increase visibility on the relationship between labour issues and biodiversity, especially in international negotiation processes.
