The Orango National Park, located in the Biosphere Reserve of the Bijagos archipelago, is the first protected area declared in Guinea Bissau and one of the places with the greatest biodiversity in the country.
Despite the high natural values of the park and its fragility, the technical and human resources available to deal with the many threats it suffers are very limited.
An added problem, which is particularly affected by local populations, is the increase in the hippo population as a result of the conservation measures established in the park. This fact leads to the animals entering the agricultural fields of local communities, causing significant economic losses.
In the National Park, the aim is to carry out ecotourism development actions, through the identification and self-sustainable development of an ecotourism product in the Bijagos archipelago, minimising the impact on the natural environment and local communities.
