The conservation of the native breed of Galego do Monte horse

MITECO

The study and conservation of the Galego do Monte horse through land stewardship agreements in the areas of A Serra do Cando and Monte Cabalar is the project being developed by the University of Vigo with the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation and which aims to preserve this variety of breed, native to Galicia.

The initiative has begun with a census of the current populations of these horses in the Serra do Cando and Monte Cabalar. In this census, in addition, the population parameters of distribution of sexes, ages, etc., will be distinguished. With the data, the University of Vigo will begin a study of the problems of the species (population, territorial, sectoral conflicts, health status, etc.). Once the situation of the horses is known, the design of measures for the consolidation of the population will begin, land stewardship agreements will be carried out and, finally, a diagnosis of the Forest Certification Systems will be presented.
