The initiative seeks to increase the commitment in the fight against climate change in Spanish cities.
This WWF Spain project has increased the commitment in the fight against climate change in Spanish cities through the proposal of mitigation and adaptation actions and the promotion of good practices at the municipal level. Specifically, the initiative has sought to accelerate the commitments in the fight against climate change of Spanish municipalities for a transition to a low-carbon economy and to significantly increase the use of sustainable, efficient and renewable energy solutions in the coming decades.
To this end, its activities include:
- Launch and dissemination of the “Earth Hour Cities Challenge” competition in Spain
- Information report of the cities on the cCCR (Carbon Cities Climate Registry) platform and selection process of the three finalist cities in Spain
- Selection of finalists by the international jury of the “Earth Hour Cities Challenge” competition and celebration of the national event
- Launch of the international campaign “We love cities” and award ceremony at the international conference ceremony
The project has contributed to increasing the interest of Spanish cities in the implementation of actions to mitigate and fight against climate change, allowing them to share actions with 163 cities around the world and serve as an example and inspiration. The actions of the three Spanish cities participating in the competition: A Coruña, Córdoba and Murcia, are included in three lines: low-carbon actions, actions in renewable energies and actions in energy efficiency. The winning Spanish city, Cordoba, also participated in the ICLEI Annual Congress and international award ceremony in Seoul.
