This programme aims to consolidate and disseminate the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve Project.
The initiative was born in 2009 with the aim of declaring the extension of A Coruña territory of almost 114,000 hectares vertebrated by the Mero and Mandeo rivers a Biosphere Reserve.
This large area includes coastal areas, coastal valleys and inland mountain ranges, ranging from the coast to the border with the province of Lugo, where it connects with the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve. This extensive area includes 49 types of habitats of Community interest, 12 of which are classified as priorities in the Habitat Directive.
The presentation of the candidacy was entrusted to CEIDA by the Provincial Council of A Coruña within the Mandeo Project, co-financed with European ERDF funds. The proposal was approved in May 2013. It is for this reason that the initiative seeks to publicize the relevance of this project, in addition to strengthening the commitment of the local population to it and mobilizing the socioeconomic potential of the territory at the service of conservation.
Within the framework of the initiative “Valorisation, capitalisation and consolidation of the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve project”, different actions have been planned that will be developed around three axes:
1. Citizen participation programme within the framework of the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve
The program will include activities such as a traveling exhibition on this reserve with its corresponding digital version to be freely downloaded.
Workshops are also planned for the diagnosis of the demands and opportunities that arise in the conservation of natural resources, a diagnosis that will be applied to environmental education facilities. At the same time, an identification of the business fabric of the territory will be carried out and a workshop aimed at this sector will be proposed for its involvement in the reserve through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). All this will be complemented by an environmental education program aimed at the educational centers of the territory.
2. Social communication campaign on the potential of the Biosphere Reserve for the conservation of natural resources
This second axis will consist of the celebration of an information day for the media and the publication of informative material.
3. International Seminar on Biosphere Reserves
It will focus especially on good practices for the conservation of natural heritage in harmony with the socio-economic development of the territory.
In short, the project tries to value awareness of natural heritage, while encouraging the formation of socio-economic initiatives that result in the conservation of the territory.
