The initiative considers wild cattle as a factor in the sustainable development of dehesa habitats. It is one of the most characteristic ecosystems for the use of natural resources in Spain.
In Extremadura, where there are currently almost 50,000 hectares dedicated to this work, it is the ideal habitat for the breeding of the fighting bull. The abandonment of traditional practices has led to an increase in rents but has caused some environmental problems. The purpose of this project is to promote activities aimed at promoting wild cattle as a factor that generates wealth in rural areas.
The actions contemplated are the following:
- Carrying out a socio-economic and environmental diagnosis of the pasture.
- Design and implementation of a remote sensing program for satellite monitoring of pastures.
- Planting of fodder species for livestock use.
- Use of vegetable residues as supplementary feed for fighting cattle.
- Creation of an environmental quality seal for agricultural and livestock farms in the dehesa that comply with a sustainable management system.
- Design and development of a knowledge management software for the dehesa and the fighting bull.
- Bases for the creation of a State Agency for Fighting Cattle.
- Organization of the Day of the Dehesa and children’s and youth livestock days.
- Cataloguing and design of alternative activities related to fighting cattle and inventory of the architecture of the pasture.
- Rehabilitation of traditional elements of the pasture.
