Tool for the strategic planning of the impacts of climate change in coastal areas (EsClimaTic)

MITECO

  • This project has established the most relevant indicators and impacts of climate change and its influence on the maritime fishing sector of the Ría de Arousa.
  • It has created an interactive and user-friendly digital tool to transfer information to local sea-linked companies, allowing them to assess their vulnerability and resilience and introduce or design strategic and governance measures in their sustainability plans.
  • This initiative combines the traditional knowledge of primary producers, with special representation of women in all groups, and scientific knowledge.

The general objective is to develop a pilot project that establishes a methodology for self-diagnosis of the resilience of the SMEs producing and processing the Ría de Arousa directly or indirectly linked to the Galician maritime-fishing sector.

  • Identification of present and future stressors and impacts of climate change on the marine environment. To this end, two workshops will be held with primary producers (guilds, shellfish gatherers, fishermen and others) that will aim to know and identify the impacts of climate change that are affecting the fisheries in the Ría de Arousa area.
  • Prioritisation of indicators in order of importance and grouping by dimension (economic, social, environmental and governance) to develop a SWOT analysis.
  • Characterisation of the vulnerability and resilience of SMEs through a three-step self-diagnosis tool: identification of their percentage of links with the maritime-fishing sector, identification of the impact of stressors and impacts of climate change on them and compilation of the adaptation measures to which each company within its sector can contribute.
  • Preparation of a manual with information on the sector’s actions to deal with the impacts and stressors identified, sources of funding, potential collaborators, etc., as well as clear and defined objectives to prevent maladaptation.
  • Final day to share the indicators defined, how they affect the different sectors and the importance of dealing with the impacts of climate change, with the active participation of the key agents of the maritime-fishing sector of the Ría de Arousa.
  • An innovative self-diagnosis tool has been implemented for SMEs in the maritime-fishing sector, promoting their resilience to climate change. Through participatory methodologies, solid knowledge has been generated about the stressors and vulnerabilities of the sector, allowing concrete adaptation measures to be established.
  • Key areas for the resilience of the sector have been identified, such as the need to strengthen collaborative governance, improve the traceability of seafood products and encourage the implementation of nature-based solutions.
  • In relation to the PNACC and its first work programme, the project has contributed to the development of tools for strategic adaptation planning in fisheries and aquaculture. In addition, it has generated key data to improve knowledge on climate impacts in coastal areas and has facilitated the integration of adaptation into decision-making in the fisheries sector.
  • The experience obtained serves as a replicable model for other coastal regions in Spain and reinforces the importance of continuing to promote initiatives that align scientific knowledge with the reality of the productive sector.
