Urban renaturation of Pamplona 2025 (RUNA 2025)

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

Pamplona pilots a transformation of the city through its river courses, which it considers to be key points where the urban fabric converges with the natural ecosystem. Taking rivers as the backbone of urban space, it is proposed to recover the relationship of citizens with the river. Restored parks and river reserves are the protagonists of a strategy that returns part of its original space to the natural environment and serves to mitigate the vulnerability of the urban fabric to flooding.

The project, which has been based on the River Planning Model developed by the Pamplona City Council in recent years, lays the foundations for a resilient city committed to the natural environment.

Pamplona, through its URBAN AGENDA 2030, within the framework of which this project is integrated, has opted for green and blue infrastructures as a tool to achieve a greener city, committed to the fight against climate change, with more sustainable mobility. A Pamplona where equality, participation, coexistence, inclusion, ecology, universal accessibility and the perspective of age and gender are fundamental values.

RUNA 2025 develops a municipal green and blue infrastructure plan and a sustainable urban drainage strategy, which will support 11 different actions, located on the Arga (mainly), Sadar and Elorz rivers, freeing the river ecosystem from anthropic pressures, resuming its ecological function, increasing its biodiversity and articulating a consistent green infrastructure around the different riverbeds that run through the city.

  • Actions on the Arga River to expand and improve the river corridor in Beloso Bajo and Trinitarios, creation of a river reserve in the Ilundain Mill and improvement of longitudinal connectivity by demolishing a dam in the Caparroso Mill.
  • Actions on the Elorz River to eliminate dams and improve ecological connectivity in the river.
  • Cleaning of urban solid waste and control of invasive flora species in the three river environments.
  • Renaturalization of school playgrounds in municipal nursery schools.
