The GLORIA 2 project capitalizes on the results obtained in the first part of the GLORiA project to advance the knowledge and management of fish escapes from aquaculture facilities due to extreme weather events. The activities that will be developed during this year include the creation of a system for identifying escaped fish based on deep learning, which will be complemented by a selection of biomarkers, as well as a proposal for a labeling system that allows the consumer to make more informed purchasing decisions.

With all this, the predictive model of leak events will be improved through time series analysis together with an analysis of the socioeconomic effects of leaks throughout the value chain. In addition, it will deepen the knowledge of the role played by aquaculture facilities within the Natura 2000 Network. The entire project is developed under a participatory management model in which all the actors involved are expected to contribute their experience so that Spanish aquaculture is provided with greater resilience when facing future climate change scenarios. Researchers from the departments of Marine Sciences and Applied Biology, and Agrochemistry and Biochemistry participate.

1. To promote participatory management in relation to fish escapes, collaborating with production companies, fishermen’s associations, competent administrations and research centres.

2. Use state-of-the-art artificial vision and analysis technologies to improve the identification of escaped fish in the fish market and, therefore, their traceability.

3. To improve, through morphometric and physiological biomarkers, the traceability of escaped fish entering distribution chains , in order to guarantee food safety for consumers.

4. Analyse the level of fraud in products shared by aquaculture and extractive fisheries, proposing measures related to labelling that allow correct identification.

5. Predict future behaviors and relationships of fish escapes with respect to environmental conditions.

6. Analyse the management plans of the Natura 2000 Network and marine strategies to improve information on the effect of fish escapes.

7. Analyse societal preferences about fish escape management measures and its implications for fresh fish market prices and the protection of food and environmental security.

Among the main results of the GLORiA2 project is the automatic recognition of wild, escaped and farmed individuals through the prototype of the identification system based on artificial vision, with an identification <error of 30%, conditioned by the characteristics of the photos. To do this, the acquisition of the specimens was carried out in the market through trusted wholesalers and retailers, who warned when they obtained large catches of anomalous quantities of fish after storms at sea. In total, the dataset has 6,190 images, of which 2,469 of sea bass, 1,008 of sea bass, and 2,713 are of sea bream.

Through time series analysis, it was possible to improve the predictive model developed in the first stage of the GLORiA project. This statistical analysis of each of the time series included static data associated with escapes and environmental factors and graphs of the farms and the correlations between variables were identified.

The project also integrated an economic analysis of fish escapes from aquaculture farms due to extreme weather events. On the other hand, the optimal biomarkers were selected to ensure reliable traceability of the product to be marketed, with a bibliographic review, in addition to preparing a document of concrete and homogeneous proposals for the prevention and management of aquaculture escapes and evaluating the labelling process at key points of the fish marketing chain.
