The Beaches, Rivers, Volunteering and Land Stewardship Programme has so far mobilised nearly 2,000 volunteers and 26 entities in the cleaning and conservation of the coastline and river basins since its inception last March.

This initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment through the Biodiversity Foundation, aims to promote the involvement of citizens in the conservation of the coastline and the areas that make up the inter-community watersheds, as well as to develop a stable network of volunteers for the maintenance and improvement of these spaces through different volunteer programs.

Until 30 November , conservation activities will be carried out on the coast and rivers of Spain’s inter-community river basins with land stewardship entities, with an emphasis on waste prevention and collection. It is expected that 5,700 volunteers will have been mobilized by then.

Since March, of the 26 land stewardship entities, 14 have organized volunteer days in rivers and 12 have done so on beaches in the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Aragon, Cantabria, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Galicia, Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Madrid, the Basque Country, the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community.

The 2,000 volunteers who have already participated in the conference have focused on the removal of waste and cleaning of the different areas, but other activities have also been carried out related to the restoration of river and coastal heritage, reforestation and elimination of invasive species, as well as awareness and information for users.

In this edition, some land stewardship entities have promoted various activities to join forces with the European Commission’s Let’clean up Europe initiative that was held on May 10 with the aim of promoting citizen action in the prevention and generation of waste.
