Spanish environmentalists happy with the outcome of the Climate Summit

Environmental organizations believe that the Montreal Climate Summit has been a major step forward, as governments have laid the groundwork for negotiating future emissions reductions, beyond 2012. This ensures the continuity of the Kyoto Protocol after the first commitment period. According to conservation organizations, most of the world’s countries are preparing to fight climate change together and more decisively, the continuity of the Kyoto Protocol after 2012 has been ensured and the necessary pathways for further emission reductions have been established.

This first meeting of the Parties has been historic, recognizing the urgency of the threat that climate change poses to the world’s poorest peoples, and ultimately to all of us. The decision taken here has set the stage for long-term action,” Sara Pizzinato, head of the Climate Change Campaign at Greenpeace Spain, said in Montreal.

“Common sense has prevailed and ministers are ready to talk about further emissions reductions,” said Jennifer Morgan, director of WWF’s International Climate Change Programme. Everyone now knows that the Kyoto Protocol is the only acceptable way to combat climate change and the Montreal meeting has achieved a success in taking another step in this process.”

Ecologists in Action is satisfied with the agreement reached, but regrets that this change in the course of the negotiations occurred too late to make sufficient progress in agreements that help alleviate the effects of climate change.
