We are launching an awareness programme on the marine protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network in Spain

  • This programme includes a series of innovative tools, such as a virtual exhibition or an escape room, to bring the values of these spaces closer to society and raise awareness about their protection through gamification
  • It also has a play, “The Invisible Diver”, which uses art and emotions to convey the importance of the ocean and its protection, and which has just premiered in Barcelona

January 16, 2023– The LIFE INTEMARES project, coordinated by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, has launched an awareness program that aims to raise awareness in society about the value and importance of the marine protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network in Spain. Within this framework, a series of innovative tools have been developed that combine gamification, art and science, including a virtual exhibition, an escape room and a play, as well as 360º videos and infographics on the different marine demarcations. The resources developed allow the user to immerse themselves in the marine environment and learn about habitats and species and learn about the importance of their protection. Specifically, the virtual exhibition is set in the spaceship of an alien that arrives on Earth, attracted from space by this blue planet, and that begins a mission in a Spanish marine Natura 2000 Network space. This exhibition is made up of different interactive points, which give access to videos, maps and infographics and allow the user to get to know this network of spaces Press release This information can be used in part or in its entirety without the need to cite sources Communication Area FUNDACIÓN BIODIVERSIDAD (Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge) C/ Peñuelas 10, 28005 Madrid Tels: 91 121 09 23 / 91 185 78 37 prensa@fundacion-biodiversidad.es www.fundacion-biodiversidad.es protected together with the habitats and species that the Habitats and Birds Directive need to protect. Another of these interactive points gives access to an escape room, a tool that, through gamification, allows the user to test what they have learned during the tour of the exhibition. The aim of the game participant is to help the project team identify and declare a new Natura 2000 site, learning some aspects of its management. Also in this framework, a play has been developed, entitled “The invisible diver”, which uses art and emotions to convey the importance of the ocean and protected marine areas. The play premiered this past Saturday at the Sala Pangolí in Barcelona, a place that will host other performances throughout this month of January. In addition, the function will soon be available in digital format. The piece, directed by the theater company El Gato Sonámbulo, tells the story of the encounter between a writer and a strange diver with an important message for her that will change her future. Through this meeting, concepts such as the ecosystem services provided by the ocean, its threats or the great biodiversity that we find in protected marine areas are discussed. With the aim of bringing the materials closer to society, a presentation of this programme will be held in five Spanish cities, an opportunity to learn about the set of resources and try some of the awareness-raising experiences proposed. The first of these events have already been held in Valencia and Barcelona, and will be followed by Bilbao, on January 19; Tenerife, on January 26; and Cádiz, on March 3. To attend, it is necessary to register at the corresponding link. In addition, all the resources will be available to the public free of charge for use and dissemination on the www.descubrenatura2000marina.es website. EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF PROTECTED AREAS The LIFE INTEMARES project advances towards the objective of achieving an effective management of the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network, with the active participation of the sectors involved and with research as basic tools.
