Grazing nature: production, processing and marketing of grazing products

Empleaverde+ program

Grazing Nature consists of the design and execution of different theoretical-practical training, advice, accompaniment and practical communities that will reinforce the skills and qualification of the extensive livestock sector, especially shepherdesses, in 4 natural areas of Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha.

The common denominator of all territories is grazing, a key professional activity for the maintenance of rural populations and the conservation of our natural heritage, in which both habitats of High Natural Value, such as majadales, or emblematic species of birds, such as steppes, depend directly on them. Grazing is also key to adapting to climate change and the food sovereignty of territories, favoring the use of natural resources over the purchase of inputs.

On the other hand, the results of socioeconomic studies show common problems such as low generational renewal, lack of profitability and differentiation in the market or the scarce industrial fabric for the transformation of primary sector products with differentiated value.

Thanks to the acquisition of new knowledge and the reinforcement of existing capacities in aspects such as the improvement of management techniques, phytotherapy, or the training of carea dogs, as well as the promotion of collective actions for the transformation, differentiation and marketing of products associated with grazing, the project will promote the generation of new economic activities around these sustainable productions and new employment opportunities. thus facilitating the improvement of the profitability of the farms and their continuity.

Line of action:

Terrestrial ecosystems

Status:

En ejecución

Execution date:

2025

End date:

2027

The objectives set are:

  1. The practical training of at least 90 workers and 20 unemployed people in specific grazing techniques, veterinary management and animal welfare, using new technologies such as smart collars, recovering the role of carea dogs or addressing animal health from an adapted and respectful approach to nature.
  2. The generation of a space for horizontal exchange of knowledge on management practices most appropriate to each territory where the farmers themselves share their experiences and results from confidence and a learning attitude.
  3. Promote collective actions for the transformation, marketing and differentiation of grazing products by providing technical, logistical and financial support to 3 local networks with the capacity to promote their own projects.
  4. Promote gender equality in the livestock sector and the improvement of soft skills with specific and transversal training in each action.
  5. Support the differentiation of extensive management livestock farms with a national recognition badge, such as the Livestock MAP of the Platform for Extensive Livestock and Pastoralism.
  6. All the actions carried out are reinforced by a powerful communication and dissemination plan to ensure both the recruitment of beneficiaries and the dissemination of the results of the different actions in each territory. This plan includes the creation of a brand image and strategy for the project with a common and recognizable argument and subplans with themes and messages adapted to each of the territories.

It is expected to improve the skills and qualifications of at least 110 people in the livestock sector, of which 33% will be women and 50% people belonging to other priority social groups, thanks to more than 1,800 hours included in 27 training, advice and dynamization actions in rural territories of Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha, including 4 Protected Natural Areas.

This will allow the training, advice and accompaniment of 490 participants in 6 key topics for profitability, animal welfare, and the quality of life of livestock farmers such as: rotational grazing, natural therapies, carea dogs, transformation and marketing of differentiated products in the market, gender and soft skills. Collaterally, it will promote the collective work of more than 30 entities in the 3 territories.

It is also expected to facilitate the transfer of knowledge generated from scientific studies and research projects, many promoted or collaborating with FGN, with direct experience in the thematic and territorial areas benefited.

With all this, it is finally expected to improve the employability situation in rural areas, both by increasing the technical level and by creating new opportunities to cover the needs detected.
