The aim of the project is to contribute to the conservation and restoration of Posidonia oceanica meadows on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, through innovative actions of collection, replanting, monitoring, citizen participation, training and collaboration, strengthening the intersectoral platform that was developed in the previous project, AccPosidonia, in order to improve biodiversity, mitigate climate change and promote marine sustainability.
Specific objectives:
OE1. To increase the visibility and awareness of society about the importance of OceanicPondonia and its restoration and to strengthen equality between men and women in the fishing sector, science and the world of diving.
OE2. Identify, evaluate and prioritize suitable areas for the replanting of Posidonia oceanica meadows.
OE3. To train and actively involve volunteers, both from the fishing sector and from any other sector of society in marine conservation actions.
OE4. Carry out a collection and replanting campaign in selected areas to increase the area of meadows and protect from uses incompatible with the survival of Posidonia oceanica in the replanted areas.
OE5. Monitor the survival and development of transplants to evaluate their evolution and success.
OE6. Monitor the recovery of the associated biodiversity of the replanted areas to assess the recovery of ecosystem functionality and the evolution and success of the interventions.
OE7. To establish synergies with fishermen’s guilds and encourage their involvement in marine restoration and bring the fishing sector closer to the rest of society.
OE8. To develop experimental in vitro culture techniques to improve future efficacy in restoration.
OE9. To establish methodologies to be able to replicate the restoration model of Posidonia oceanica in other areas of the coast, adapting it to each local context.
Action Posidonia 2. Establishment of a collaboration platform for the advancement and improvement of large-scale Posidonia oceanica meadow replanting techniques in the Mediterranean basin.
