BICHARRACO.Biodiversity and Doe Research: Habitat, Resources, Environment and Conservation.

Pleamar program

The BICHARRACO project seeks to generate rigorous scientific knowledge on elasmobranchs in the Gulf of Cadiz, especially for those species marketed under the name of dogfish (Galeorhinus galeus), in order to promote their conservation and sustainable fisheries management. Given the scarcity of existing biological and fisheries information on elasmobranchs in the Gulf of Cadiz and given the importance of SSRIs (Important Shark and Rays Areas) worldwide, the project will integrate analysis of official databases with sampling in fish markets and will collaborate with the fishing sector to help it improve the identification of vulnerable species. in addition to estimating sustainable catches, evaluating the use of habitat by these organisms and analyzing their socioeconomic relevance in the region.

This multidisciplinary approach will allow the development of more precise methodologies to identify species, better understand their distribution and ecological behaviour and provide useful tools to reduce pressure on threatened species, reconciling the conservation of marine biodiversity with the activity of the local fishing sector.

The project aims to generate accurate scientific knowledge about the elasmobranch species present in the Gulf of Cadiz, improving their identification and ecological assessment to promote sustainable management and effective conservation of them.

Specific objectives:

OE1. To improve the accuracy in the identification of elasmobranch species included under the name of dogfish.
OE2. Estimate and forecast sustainable dogfish catches through advanced analysis of historical time series through the use of official data repositories, facilitating informed decision-making in regional fisheries management.
OE3. To analyse and evaluate the use of the habitat by elasmobranch species traded in the Gulf of Cadiz through biological studies and resource-environment analysis.
OE4. To understand, through socioeconomic analysis, the current and historical state of the commercialization of the main species of elasmobranchs of commercial interest in the Gulf of Cadiz, with special attention to those marketed under the name of dogfish.
