DEEP CORE PROJECT: Recovery of reef ecosystems and awareness plan for the integration of the fishing sector in marine conservation

Pleamar program

The main objective is the restoration, conservation and surveillance of the marine areas of Granada included within the Natura 2000 Network (SAC Cliffs and seabed of Punta de la Mona, SAC Cliffs and Seabed Tesorillo-Salobreña and Natural Area Acantilados Maro-Cerro Gordo), which have suffered an impact due to the accidental loss of gear derived from fishing activity. fish and/or mythicultural culture.
To achieve this objective, an ecosystem restoration programme is proposed based on an accelerated recovery of the coral reef through actions such as shock buffering measures (waste removal, reef clean-up, integrated awareness-raising programme, involvement of the fisheries sector in marine conservation and promotion of integrated management in the area). or new techniques for increasing resilience (such as the creation of coral nurseries and the repopulation of reefs).

These actions will materialize to achieve 7 specific objectives: OE0: Create a communication program to inform, raise awareness and involve all interested parties, on the importance of the restoration and conservation of coral bottoms, the great richness and value of these areas, the threats they face and the advantages of good management, as well as to value the work of the fishing sector and its involvement in marine conservation. SO1: Increase ecosystem resilience and cushion impacts, removing residues that degrade the habitat and prevent populations from developing normally, causing friction, fracture and other pathologies in sessile species as well as bycatch of others. OE2: Collect the coral fragments broken by the waste and transfer them to the nurseries in order to apply treatments that allow both their living tissue and the calcareous part to regenerate, giving rise to a healthy colony, which is viable to reintroduce into the reef. OE3: Recover the natural cover of the reef, favouring the accelerated recovery of microhabitats for the conservation of different species that live in the ecosystem.

SO4: On-site monitoring and surveillance of marine spaces recovered from an ecosystem approach. OE5: Involve, raise awareness and train the fishing sector on the importance of coral reef conservation, with the aim of promoting synergies that contribute to the development of management and recovery plans for local ecosystems and fisheries. OE6: Involve, raise awareness and train students and the general public in marine conservation. To value the effort of the work of the fishing sector and its involvement in marine conservation.
