TIRRAQUI: Impact of Fishing on chondrichthyan species and their habitats in SCIs and SACs RN2000 and the Isra Zone of the Iberian Southeast

Pleamar program

The TIRRAQUI project will carry out a technical characterization of the different fishing modalities in which sharks, rays and chimaeras appear as companion species, in addition to the spatio-temporal characterization of the catches of the target species and the bycatch. To this end, shipments will be made on boats of the different fishing modalities, incorporating the data of the IEO’s MEDIT Campaign. With the combination of the information from the aforementioned sources, possible laying areas, concentration of breeding and juvenile chondrichthyans will be located and the study area will be categorized according to the highest probability of capture of these species, the gear that catches them the most and their preferred habitats. As a result, essential information will be obtained to subsequently be able to develop management tools for these species in SCIs, SACs and ISRA areas aimed at protecting them, especially those considered critically endangered, through management plans. This project has a participatory and collaborative approach, involving the professional fishing sector in decision-making and awareness of the importance of species conservation. In line with the above, a protocol for the release of by-catches of vulnerable chondrichthyan species will be developed. All the documentation generated will also be very useful both for training cycles associated with the environment, as well as to raise awareness and make society aware of the environmental values of SCIs, SACs RN200 and ISRA zones, protection tools and the sustainable exploitation of resources.

The main objective of the project is to evaluate the interaction of trawl and small gear fisheries with chondrichthyan species and their habitats in the SCIs, SACs of the RN2000 and the ISRA area of Marina Alta. It is a first step towards better management and greater conservation of sharks and rays in the Region of Murcia and the province of Alicante, between 30 and 800 meters deep, in the Levantine-Balearic Demarcation (LEBA).
