MoSTFun will develop the knowledge, approaches and networks necessary to initiate routine monitoring of aquatic fungal biodiversity across the environmental, biogeographical and political landscape of the European continent. It will also fill gaps in ecosystems that are not currently routinely monitored with intense human impact, such as glaciers and estuaries, and emerging threats that are not routinely monitored, such as the spread of antifungal resistance genes. In addition to producing novel data and knowledge, MoSTFun will also take the first steps towards the implementation of aquatic fungal biodiversity monitoring programs through intensive stakeholder involvement.
MoSTFun will compile and reanalyze published datasets and metagenomes to understand the biodiversity of aquatic fungi across Europe. It will also reanalyze DNA from other biodiversity monitoring programs targeting other groups of organisms and measure the biodiversity of aquatic fungi to complement these data sets. Conduct further sampling in case studies in environments lacking biodiversity monitoring programs, such as glaciers and estuaries. It will use these datasets to develop monitoring approaches and guidelines for aquatic fungal biodiversity monitoring and integrate them into established monitoring concepts, in particular the Essential Biodiversity Variables. It will coordinate stakeholder engagement and coordination with related initiatives throughout the project and beyond with a novel knowledge hub for action on aquatic fungal biodiversity.
