PRTR Call for Proposals Project

PRISMA focuses on promoting short-cycle forestry value chains and the sustainable circular bioeconomy in mountain areas with large areas without active forest management, which are at risk of large fires, underutilization of resources and low socioeconomic activity. The project combines the knowledge and experience of leading scientific and professional organizations in close collaboration with various public administrations, through 3 geographic areas consolidated as “key” elements in multifunctional forest management adapted to climate change and the local valorization of bioproducts and ecosystem services (biodiversity, water, wood). The project integrates the carbon balance into the actions and focuses on essential socio-economic aspects (generational change, incorporation of the female sector, training, raising awareness among companies), from a holistic approach of social innovation.

The project contributes positively to the improvement of biodiversity, improvement of forest stands and resources, mitigation of climate change and fire risk. The transforming character of the project for and with the territory is given by its focus, which affects forest systems without/with little management that have endogenous resources of high potential and added value, not only for packaging wood or bioenergy (the main uses in recent years), but also for new uses and applications of higher added value (construction, carpentry, joinery, design industry, obtaining polyphenols and biochar from biochemical pyrolysis processes carried out in the CTFC biorefinery or biofertilizers and humic amendments from by-products and wood not used in traditional circuits). The gender perspective within the framework of “social innovation” will also incorporate aspects of migration, generational change and awareness-raising in companies and will be transforming elements of the project, contributing to mitigating the demographic challenge in these mountain areas and creating new green occupations, supporting entrepreneurship and female “referents”.

PRISMA aims to promote short-circuit forest CoVs and the sustainable circular bioeconomy linked to mountain territories as “key” elements in multifunctional forest management adapted to climate change, as well as the local valorization of bioproducts and ecosystem services, integrating the carbon balance in actions and a holistic approach to social innovation (generational replacement, migration, female wage gap). From the forest to the final consumer, the project will analyze the environmental impacts of the R&D&I actions proposed in the pilot areas (validation of digital tools to support multi-objective planning and management, simulations of alternative management scenarios, optimization of forest resources including ecosystem services). The project will also address the education and training of forestry CoV professionals from a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach.
