Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in forest restorations: a large-scale spatial and temporal analysis (BioFoRest)

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

BioFoRest evaluates – in terms of biological diversity and ecosystem functionality – the reforestation actions carried out in the last 70 years in Castilla-La Mancha and the Community of Madrid. The objective is to develop recommendations and indicators for decision-making in the planning and management of forest biodiversity.

Forest restoration is the most effective tool to address the climate emergency and biodiversity loss. To be successful today, reforestation requires maximizing biodiversity, functioning, and ecosystem services. BioFoRest proposes a large-scale spatial and temporal analysis of the forests of the network of mature stands of the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha. Its objective is to develop a manual of reforestation practices that maximizes these components, leaving aside the processes linked to the secondary dynamics associated with the abandonment of the territory.

The specific objectives are:

  • To evaluate the biodiversity of plants, fungi, lichens, soil microorganisms and different animal groups in the network of mature forests of Castilla-La Mancha (C-LM) and in an extensive selection that covers all types of reforestation carried out in this community and in the Community of Madrid (CAM)
  • Describe ecosystem multifunctionality, including resilience to forest disturbances and reforestation assessed.
  • To determine the success of reforestation by

development of indices that allow comparing their biodiversity and multifunctionality with those of mature C-LM forests

  • To evaluate the effects of time (changes in forest structure and productivity) and technical attributes of reforestation on its success by analyzing biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality in restored forest patches included in the National Forest Inventories in C-LM and CAM.
