Ciudad Real is the Spanish provincial capital where the temperature has risen the most in the last 50 years, 3.6ºC, and will rise the most in the coming years. CRATER is a project that will transform Ciudad Real into a city adapted to the great challenge of reducing the heat island effect and to connect it all with green axes that improve biodiversity and active mobility. This network of green axes will connect the city center with the main points of geological (volcanic) and natural interest in the surrounding area. Ciudad Real’s IV network will not only serve as a basis for social integration and active mobility policies, but will also become an ecological corridor capable of enhancing biodiversity in the urbanized environment and regulating hygrothermal variables as a strategy for resilience against climate change. All this will result in a more resilient habitat and a better quality of life for the entire population, also making the city more egalitarian.
