Development of a packaging process to reduce virgin raw material in packaging

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

Packaging (bottles and caps) for cosmetics and perfumery is made entirely of plastic materials. This project aims to reduce the virgin raw material needed to manufacture QM’s 100% plastic packaging by optimising the geometry of the bottles and the structure/design of the caps. It will be necessary to adapt QM’s packaging lines so that they can work with the new caps and bottles: To this end, the implementation of new tooling will be carried out at different points of the process and the subsequent final validation of the global process.

The main objective of this project is to design and develop a packaging process to manufacture packaging with a lower plastic grammage in order to reduce the amount of virgin plastic raw material used. Specifically, it will be carried out through:

  • New cap design with a lower wall thickness, maximizing material efficiency by reducing virgin raw material.
  • Design of new bottles with optimized geometry that allows the use of less virgin raw material (PE and PET-500, 750, 1250mL).
  • Process reengineering: design, construction and validation of 8 packaging lines of the entity that demonstrates technical solvency (QR) so that they can work with the new caps/bottles (from existing packaging lines).
