Explainable AI platform for the prediction and protection of birds in spaces destined to be wind farms (IA4BIRDS)

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

The poor location of wind farms has a detrimental effect on bird populations and the biodiversity of an area. In order to reconcile the interests of wildlife with the need to increase investments in wind farms, new infrastructure needs to be planned strategically.
The IA4BIRBDS project arises to optimize the evaluation of wind energy projects, designed as a diagnostic tool based on bird detection and monitoring, but also on the ingestion of information from external sources and the creation of a common database to evaluate the birding activity of future wind farms.

IA4BIRDS aims to design an intelligent platform that, using Explainable Artificial Intelligence algorithms, allows the development of guidelines and criteria for the environmental planning of future wind farms and thus improves decision-making and biodiversity management in the fight against climate changeIA4BIRDS focuses on the design of an intelligent, modular and scalable platform that allows the evaluation and planning of spaces intended to be wind farms to be optimised Wind. To this end, it will research and incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms in the monitoring and detection of birds and in their subsequent analysis and prediction.

Specific objectives include:

  • Design a global, modular, and scalable AI-based platform

explainable that allows optimizing the evaluation and planning of spaces destined to be wind farms by applying hybrid artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

  • Design a tool that allows the massive collection of bird data from heterogeneous sources and incorporate IoT sensors for the acoustic monitoring of birds in-situ in order to merge all the information into a single knowledge base.
  • Research in hybrid algorithms of Explainable AI for the monitoring and detection of birds and the intelligent processing of sensitivity maps that allow the design of predictive models.
  • Research and design big data analysis and visualization technologies that allow information management and the development of environmental planning guidelines and criteria.
  • To disseminate research and the use of AI to promote and strengthen R+D+i applied to the conservation of national biodiversity.
