The Pitiusas have almost 300 km of coastline that receive an average of 20 strandings a year only among cetaceans and sea turtles (in addition to other protected species). Historically, strandings were assisted by the Environmental Agents under the competence of the Balearic Government. For more than 20 years, the private company Aquarium Cap Blanc has been supporting the recovery of these animals. This collaboration led to the creation of the CREM project in 2004, and since 2014 it has been much more active in the management and recovery of stranded animals.
The CREM project ceased at the end of 2019, and the recovery of the species was delegated to centres outside the Pityusic Islands. The Oceanum Association was born with the aim of resuming the management of strandings, rehabilitation, recovery and reintroduction of marine animals that are stranded on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera.

ReVREM will allow the reinforcement of the stranding, rescue, recovery and reintroduction network of marine species in Ibiza and Formentera.
The project provides for the promotion of the protection of nature and biodiversity, heritage and natural resources, through dissemination, training and training actions for specific teams and volunteers and the general population.
The aim is for the network to be used to identify problems, threats and the status of populations, with a view to managing species.

Some of the actions on which this project will focus are:

  • Hiring and training of qualified personnel to assist in strandings and recovery of species: hiring of specialized personnel with experience in stranding and recovery care, intensive training of hired personnel to guarantee optimal performance in strandings and rescues. University internship offer.
  • Training for volunteer networks for collaboration in strandings: Talks will be held to publicize the stranding network, and give information to citizens. Likewise, workshops will be held for people who wish to participate as volunteers in the stranding network.
  • Integration of the different collaborating organizations: A functional network will be created, with a 24-hour telephone to make reports of strandings. Quarterly meetings will be held with the rest of the collaborating organisations to ensure the coordination of these entities.
  • Training of the personnel involved.
  • Educational workshops.
  • Scientific studies.
  • Assist in strandings and accidental captures.
  • Establish a system of direct long-term collaboration between the local and external fishing sector (many vessels from the Spanish east fish off the coast of the Pityusic Islands).
  • Reintroduction to the sea: release of individuals treated at the centre once it has been certified that they are healthy and will be able to survive at sea. These actions will be carried out through public releases, whenever possible, inviting collaborators and involved people, as well as citizens.
