Under the name SPARTARIA the region of southeastern Spain was known by Greeks and Romans, which conveys the importance and abundance of esparto grass in that territory. At present, the decline of esparto grass activity, together with the cessation of the use of other traditional forest resources, has contributed to the abandonment of the forests of the Region of Murcia, which, together with the extreme climatic conditions, places them in a highly vulnerable situation, threatened by desertification, loss of biodiversity and the risk of forest fires.
SPARTARIA is a transformational project that aims to fight against the abandonment of the forests, developing a model of forest use that guarantees economic profitability throughout the year, exploring different types of use such as esparto grass for industrial and traditional uses, aromatic plants and tourism, among others. These actions will be complemented with environmental restoration to increase biodiversity, reinforcing endangered populations (Jara de Cartagena and Garbancillo de Tallante) and priority habitats (9570) that reduce the risk of forest fires, and fighting desertification, erosion and creating resilient landscapes. To this end, work will be carried out jointly in three Murcian municipalities: Cartagena, Calasparra and Moratalla (traditional areas of esparto grass and aromatic plants), favoring the exchange of experiences and good practices.
Development and promotion of new economic models and capacities that promote profitable and continuous forest harvesting in the Region of Murcia, diversifying harvesting activities and encouraging new initiatives that create local employment. These uses will favor the good conservation status of forest ecosystems, the fight against desertification, the reduction of fire risk and the creation of more resilient landscapes. In particular, the most traditional uses in the area will be explored: esparto grass for industrial and traditional use, aromatic plants and tourism associated with the natural environment.
New models that promote diversification and profitable forest harvesting throughout the year, favoring the resilience of forest stands and green employment (SPARTARIA).
