The objective of the project is the development of large-format, stackable, gas-barrier packaging that is recyclable, suitable and safe for food use. To this end, it is proposed to innovate on plasma technology, which is what provides the barrier effect to gases, using novel gases that result in safe barrier coatings suitable for food use. Currently, this technology is used for packaging applicable to other sectors, and involves the use of fluorinated gases that result in the presence of perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAs) that are toxic, persistent and bioaccumulative, which makes them unsuitable for food use. For this reason, the project proposes the research of this technology with fluorine-free gases that results in coatings that, being a barrier, do not present the previous problem.
