The mountainous group of the “Prades Mountains” is distributed among 22 municipalities of the regions of Alto Campo, Bajo Campo, Cuenca de Barberà and El Priorat, which occupy an area of 36,980 hectares of great wealth in terms of native fauna and flora, including the Poblet Natural Site and the Bonelli’s eagle, being one of the main protected natural areas in the south of Catalonia and next Natural Park. However, these mountains have been subjected to intense exploitation that has caused a progressive deterioration, together with the high risk of fires and the effects of climate change.
This innovative project, resilient to major forest fires, is key to combating depopulation and its consequent loss of wealth in rural areas and highlights the value of the forest bioeconomy as an economic and social engine of the territory. It is intended to act on 11 areas, 540 hectares of the total where small entrepreneurial bioeconomy projects are already operating and is supported by the Generalitat.
The main objective is the creation of an agroforestry mosaic in the protected area of the Prades Mountains, currently at high risk from large forest fires, contributing to the promotion of the forest bioeconomy, to face the demographic challenge, to boost green employment and local entrepreneurship, generating productive synergies between the territory and the primary sector.
