SEO/BirdLife was a beneficiary in the 2019 Call for Grants with the SOS-Nidos project, which aimed to contribute to the conservation of wild species that inhabit urban environments, mainly those that are threatened or affected by the destruction and disappearance of their nesting sites.

  • Dissemination and communication of the project.
  • Citizen science program.
  • Improvement of knowledge and attention to queries.
  • Creation of a Communication Plan to capture the main messages, including 2 publications in the magazines Aves y Naturaleza and Aventureros. And a section on the entity’s website about the project:
  • Carrying out actions on the radio: an advertising spot and radio spot.
  • Development of an application (App) to inventory breeding sites (colonies or isolated pairs), to which the possibility of recording roosts has been incorporated as an improvement, as frequent places also in urban environments.
  • Publication and dissemination of the “Report on the protection of wild birds that live in urban environments against the destruction of their nests and the loss of nesting sites”.
  • Follow-up and reporting of cases of destruction of nests that reach SEO/BirdLife, through a follow-up technician who attends to these queries and advises on how to act in each case. In total, 79 queries have been received and answered, mainly through email.

Through a powerful communication campaign through social networks and general media, it has been possible to expose the problem of the destruction of nests in urban environments. This has been complemented by the creation of an open-access App that facilitates the involvement of citizens in the conservation of urban birds, and the generation of a final legal report that brings together the entire European and state regulatory framework on administrative and criminal offences on the protection of urban wild birds.
