Despite the scientific evidence on the impact of climate change, the adoption of adaptation measures in protected areas needs to be accelerated. That is why the justification for the project arises from the insufficient transfer of scientific knowledge to management and the lack of collaborative planning in scenarios with a high degree of uncertainty. According to the entity, scientific-technical criteria have recently been developed to incorporate climate change adaptation measures in their planning and management. For all of the above, the effort of the administrations will not be effective without social involvement. Analysis of environmental perceptions is necessary to more effectively address the design and implementation of adaptation measures.

The main objective has focused on accelerating the development of climate change adaptation measures in Spain’s protected areas.

Two pilot experiences have been launched in the Sierra Espuña Regional Park and in the Garajonay National Park with the aim of designing, in collaboration with socio-economic actors and with the managers of both spaces, proposals for actions to adapt to climate change.

To this end, some of the actions developed within the framework of the project have been:

  • Transfer of scientific knowledge through webinars and technical conferences with key socio-economic agents.
  • Development of research on the social perception of climate change in the two protected areas.
  • Holding of working sessions to energize the social agents in the two parks in order to design and adopt measures to adapt to climate change.
  • Promotion of social and institutional recognition of climate change adaptation measures through the awards promoted by Europarc-Spain for “inspiring experiences in society and protected areas”.
  • English translation of the manual developed by EUROPARC-Spain for the adaptation of protected areas to climate change.
  • Dissemination of lessons learned for application in other protected areas in Spain and Europe.
  • Report on the perception of climate change among the socio-economic agents of the Sierra Espuña Regional Park and in the Garajonay National Park.
  • Training actions: 3 webinars and 3 conferences.
  • Collaborative knowledge work sessions for the design and adoption of adaptation measures.
  • Incorporation of the climate change adaptation category in the “inspiring experiences society and protected areas awards” promoted by Europarc-Spain.
  • English translation of the Manual on Adaptation to Climate Change of Protected Areas.
