Fertilization and water quality improvement using natural zeolites and other biosilicas (FERTIZEL)

MITECO

  • This project pursues the objective of zero discharge from agriculture and irrigation processes in the Mar Menor basin through an alternative fertilization model using natural zeolites.
  • To this end, it will carry out demonstrative fertilization treatments on three different types of crops, covering 20 locations in two municipalities within the Campo de Cartagena territory, for nitrogen reduction.
  • Similarly, work will be carried out on treatments with zeolites that allow the replacement of desalination plants and filters with natural catalytic media that at the same time favor the de-autrophication of irrigation ponds.

The project addresses the replacement of fertilization and other agrochemicals as a treatment for agricultural pests with inorganic plant and soil biostimulants based on natural or synthetic zeolites (biosylics) on 90 ha.

Among its specific objectives are:

  • 80% substitution of nitrogen and agrochemicals in agriculture.
  • Replacement of desalination plants and filters with natural biocatalytic media in irrigation ponds, softening the water.
  • De-eutrophication of irrigation ponds by 100% naturally.
  • Achieve a technical consensus between farmers and irrigators.
  • Achieve a scientific consensus on the results of inorganic biostimulation.
  • Ecofertilization activities, that is, fertilization activities without the use of agrochemicals, in a natural way, through biostimulation.
  • Treatment activity (de-eutrophication and desalination) without the use of agrochemicals, in a natural way, without energy consumption or investment.
  • Involvement of crops and irrigation ponds of farmers and irrigators through training, awareness and capacity building workshops and actions.
  • Performing baseline analyses of the objective parameters for improvement and demonstration of the proposed pilot project.
  • Creation of a scientific committee to provide support for the generation and use of scientific knowledge, research and follow-up of project actions.
