A plan has been carried out to improve the maintenance of the water ponds for the conservation of species in La Noguera, Lleida.
The Association for the Safeguarding of Biodiversity and Nature (Associació La Sabina) has completed the project “Recovery and maintenance of temporary ponds in steppe ecosystems (La Noguera, Lleida)” which has had the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition through its 2017 call for grants. The objective has been to improve the management and recovery of habitats (of community interest) to promote the constitution of amphibian metapopulations and the conservation of endangered species in a SPA protected area.
Through the reconstruction and improvement of the ponds, it has been possible to maintain and improve these spaces, vital for species of amphibians and birds, such as the black-bellied sandgrouse. Through these actions, the entity has tried to recover these spaces that were once maintained through traditional activities such as agriculture and livestock. It has also made it possible to know the main threats for each of them, being able to improve management in the coming years.
