REDAPTA: Building Governance Spaces for Adaptation in Mediterranean Rivers

MITECO

  • The REDAPTA project has made it possible to design strategies to reduce vulnerability to global change in two Mediterranean basins; focusing its activities on the Tordera River (Catalonia) and the Serpis River (Valencia).
  • The entity has prepared a guide that includes the main methodological steps and that may be useful for sectors interested in learning about the processes of co-design of measures to adapt to global change.
  • The initiative has carried out training actions for citizens so that they can be part of the decision-making process in the participatory monitoring of these two river sections.

The entity, which had previously worked on the problems associated with river courses derived from climate change and anthropic phenomena such as urbanization, developed this project in order to generate spaces for debate and citizen participation in decision-making as well as in the different measures and actions implemented to improve the state of rivers. their channels and their associated ecosystems.

  • Develop a "strategy for reducing vulnerability to the impacts of global change" in the Tordera and Serpis rivers, which has been developed through a co-design process, with which the aim has been to diversify opinions or perspectives for decision-making.
  • To carry out participatory monitoring of actions to improve river morphology and biodiversity; In this activity, participants observed a stretch of the river and, using digital tools developed in the project, learned to record different data and indicators.
  • To promote innovation in governance through the exchange of experiences throughout the Iberian Peninsula, as there are various initiatives to improve dialogue and negotiation between the public administration and citizens.

  • Development of a strategy to reduce vulnerability to the impacts of climate change on the Tordera and Serpis rivers.
  • Participatory monitoring of actions to restore the fluvial morphology in the Tordera and Serpis rivers.
  • Innovation in water governance for Iberian rivers.
  • Communication and dissemination of project results.

  • The REDAPTA project wanted to highlight the governance spaces for adaptation to climate change in sensitive stretches of Mediterranean rivers. The activities carried out by CREAF have been located in two basins characterised by being particularly vulnerable to the impacts of global change and by the presence of multi-stakeholder platforms, such as the Tordera river basin (Catalonia) and the Serpis river basin (Valencia).
  • With the aim of developing a strategic document to address the challenges linked to global change in each basin, the entity carried out a participatory process for the co-design of specific adaptation measures, in which they involved a wide range of actors, including associations, farmers, tourism, the scientific world and administrations at different levels. thus generating documents with future tools to be implemented by administrations.
  • In addition, the project developed by CREAF has made it possible to carry out training or training for citizens in the participatory monitoring of two river sections, through the observation of different indicators on their state and evolution, thus generating local communities interested in monitoring and improving the state of conservation of the river spaces of the basins and the species they host.
